A native Californian, Waylon Hicks grew up in Central California. After high school, he attended the Conservatory of Music at The University of the Pacific where he earned a BA degree in Music. Waylon is an energetic and soulful musician. He has been playing for over 20 years now but is never afraid to push the envelope and allow himself to surpass his boundaries in search of new sounds and musical ideas. When watching him perform you can see and hear his great passion for music and the hard work he puts into it. Mr. Hicks seemingly has the natural ability to take simple riff-based melodies and build thoughtful improvised solos from them, which helps motivate and energize fellow musicians on stage.
Waylon’s approach to playing has always been to play “in the moment.” Always staying true to the art of improvisation, Waylon relies on and feeds off of his fellow musicians, creating a new musical conversation with every performance. His solos are truly improvised and although he’s developed his own bag of tricks and licks through the years, you’ll never hear the same performance from him more than once. He loves to perform and to share his music with others and this is proven every time he’s on stage. Although primarily a small group jazz performer these days, Waylon has performed in a number of different settings including big band, solo classical saxophone, saxophone quartets and wind ensembles.
Waylon Hicks has had the honor of studying and/or performing with such artists as the legendary Dave Brubeck, Bobby Watson, Christian McBride, Dr. Don DaGrade, Bobby Shew, Pete Christlieb, Bruce Paulson, Bob McChesney, Bill Cunliffe, Doc Severinsen, Ed Shaughnessy, Jeff Hamilton, Arturo Sandoval and Steve Allen. In addition to performing, Mr. Hicks also runs his own private music lessons business in Temecula, CA. He caters to students of all ages interested in wind instruments.
Those who know Waylon personally can tell he is thankful for his gift in music and does not take his talents for granted. He works extremely hard to promote and make a living as a performer and educator. Waylon has a great talent for music but more so, he has a great love and passion for music and it has become undoubtedly apparent that this is a lifelong endeavor for him.
